2008 Race Summary
The 2008 Assault on Mt. Mitchell was conducted under some of the most extreme heat conditions in the event's history. Even though riders left a mid 70’s start at 6:30 a.m. in Spartanburg, SC, temperatures reached above 80 in the unforgiving sun at 6,600 feet 102 miles later. Documentation of this event was provided by the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation and its executive director and Assault veteran, Dr. Houck Medford. The Assault on Mt. Mitchell®, celebrating its 33rd year on June 9, 2008, was a remarkable and memorable event for all participants and finishers. The testimony of most contestants places this experience in the realm of a "personal epic" and the competition always produces an intimate story which is full of chatter and personal recounting with friends and acquaintances. You are invited to “Share Your Journey” in a sponsored storytelling contest by the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation and Virtual Blue Ridge which concludes on October 15, 2008.
