This is a photo of the north portal of the Tanbark Ridge Tunnel. The date is early to mid 1950. Troitino & Brown, Inc. of Asheville had the contract to place reinforced concrete lining at the south and north ends of the tunnel (the south portal and head wall were completed first before moving to the north portal) Of the six or possibly seven in the photo, I can identify three. Third from the right is my father, Clark "Pete" Brown, co-owner of Troitino & Brown, Inc.; second from the right is George Stewart, Project Superintendent and fourth from the right is J.A. Daves, Project Engineer for the Bureau of Public Roads.
